Sometimes the World Sucks - Ways to Take a Break

I don't know about you, but these days feel heavy. You can't turn around or take a breath without some tragic or shocking news about politics, natural disasters or acts of terrorism. And that's national news...forget local or family events.

I'm sensitive and an empath, and sometimes it can really suck. I can feel drained, angry, overwhelmed, helpless, or numb when I hear about such tragic events, or get sucked into political debates. But I've learned to take breaks from all of that.

Taking a break doesn't make you weak, and it doesn’t mean that you don't care or that you're selfish. It is simply refueling so you can be in the world with your big strong heart and face the world. If you are a sensitive empath, you have a lot to give, but, as they say on airplanes, "secure the oxygen mask on yourself first.”

Here's some ways to take a break. You may have more, but this is a good start.

  1. Turn off the news and social media. Maybe even turn off your phone. Not forever - even an hour can help get some space.
  2. Distract with things that calm you down or make you feel happy. It’s not wrong to bring yourself happiness in the midst of suffering in the world. You can't give what you don't have, so if you want to show up for others make sure your tank is full. My remedy? I love comedy podcasts and guided meditations.
  3. Connect. Connect with yourself by acknowledging thoughts, feelings and body sensations. Connect with friends who are supportive and grounding. Connect with nature, spirituality, religion, and/or a sense of gratitude.

These aren't magic and won't make problems go away. But they do have the potential to refuel you so you are stronger and more able to deal with the world we live in.

If you still struggle with overwhelming emotions from events that are happening around you and feel like you need help, please reach out to me today. I would love to walk you through taking a break and help you get to a better place.
